A client has bought a really grand Epson Stylus Photo R2400 for his top notch photography business. Putting aside my jealousy for a moment I tried to install the necessary driver and software from the CD.
But we find that:
1) The CD that came with his new printer is not just incompatible with Tiger/Leopard, it doesn’t work on Intel macs!
2) We only find this out on the website after trying to install. So it insists we reset the Printer Setup app and restart.
3) Then download the Intel driver and printer configuration software, and reinstall the printer.
So you do all that and although it will find and install and print to the printer, nothing is printed out. And the configurations in the printing dialog are inaccessible (greyed/struck through). The pdf manual put this down to the wrong driver, but it isn’t. Re-Reinstalling the driver does nothing; no printouts.
4) Searching the Epson site yields nothing. Tech support only available in US or Canada. Thanks so much.
Beginning to feel peeved on behalf of my client now because he isn’t mucking about; he has a serious business and either the mac, Epson, or possibly me are letting him down. Then I realise that his other USB printer was found immediately after reseting the printer system. The new printer connects via Firewire, but can it connect via USB? Sure enough it does. And guess what? Fully configurable options appear on printing!
Nowhere at any time did we find anything that said the drivers do not work with Firewire.

I’ve just got an iMac using Leopard connected to an epson r2400 via USB. Judging by the quality (or not!) of the prints and the rapid speed they print, the print is being controlled by the printer. I’ve got no access to the print boxes to turn off ‘printer controls printing’ element that I have been used to with my old PC.
I’ve downloaded the latest drivers from epson but no change.
I’ve read so much on the internet but dont have the faintest idea how to solve this issue although feel that it must be a driver problem. I originally installed via the CD that came with the printer which I feel might be the root of my problem.
Can anyone out there give me guidance on what I can do to sort this out?
Hope to hear from someone.
Hazel
Also just upgraded from tiger to leopard. My epson r2400 now prints washed out colors even after downloading the driver upgrade from epson. I have a thriving note card business so this really sucks! I’m thinking about wiping my hard drive clean and re-installing tiger. Don’t know what else to do. Maybe I’ll by a Canon printer next time.
you will find the solution to your washed out color issue here:

the driver that the computer defaults to is an apple driver. the above link tells you how to reset that.
i have an apple mac OSX and R2400 printer. Photo colour bares no relation to the colour on the screen! Have downloaded driver upgrade from Epson – no good! Tried changing/switching drivers – colours printed either too weak or far too strong! Any ideas? Computer and printer doesnt seem to communicate with each other!
If Chris’ advice above doesn’t work, I don’t know what. I’m sure you are fully aware what a dark art printer/screen calibration is. And a lot depends on using kosher inks and the right paper. If you do find a solution please repost here.
OK folks, go to the australian epson site (search Epson Australia) then go to the support/downloads links and download and install everything relating the Epson R2400. For some reason the drivers from Australia are working as they should! This was told to me by a nice bloke t Calumet, Wardour Street, London. Now I am getting decent prints from Photoshop again at last. I bought the Mac after I bought the Epson thinking I would have the ultimate photographers tool…!!!
Thanks Martin. What is it about OZ and NZ? I have often found that I am picking up obscure driver software at sites hosted there rather than anywhere else. Last time it was a Canon printer driver for Mac that I couldn’t find on any of the regular sites.
However, with the Mac – I don’t know about the Epson – you do have a fantastic bit of kit. I hope you are able to exploit it to the full for your photography.
Now Epson released new drivers v.6.57. Haven’t tried an actual print yet but so far the print dialog box looks more like it used to in Tiger… Driver 6.12 never worked for me (unable to switch color matching off)
I have exactly the same problem. Did you really found a solution with australian drivers??
